United Nations World Issues Reflection

May 31, 2007

Think about the presentations and reflect on the projects your classmates presented and the information you listened to. Explain with details and specific information what you learned, what you found interesting, surprising, or shocking about the presentations you heard in class.

In class, we presented our United Nations World Issues. There were many topics. I our class they were: Poverty, Drug Abuse, Child Labor, Human Rights, Girl Child, and Children’s Rights. The presentations were all done very well and the presentations were all very interesting. I learned many new things in that Social Studies class. I learned that gender discrimination can kill people because the women won’t get enough food because all the men get the food first. It was very interesting that half a billion children in the world live on only half a dollar or less which equals about 3.5RM and only on lunch I spend about 4-5 RM a day. It was very surprising to me that in Africa, the problem for Human Rights is poverty. I always thought the problem for Human Rights in Africa would be racism and religion because of the apartheid, which was the separation between the ‘whites’ and the ‘colored’ people. I thought that would be the problem because the apartheid killed many people and many people were left home less and on the street. I found it very shocking that 250 million children suffer from child labour. I didn’t think that the number was so high!

What would you change to improve your project/presentation if you were to do the assignment again?

If I were to redo my project, I would change many things. I think first I would change the way that I managed the time. It was a very big issue for us, we barely finished making our Imovie before we had to present. From the beginning of the project I would have stayed in at lunch and worked on it more at home. Another big thing I would change is I would have probably done a Power Point because if I do a Power Point I can work on it at home because I don’t have a Mac at home and I can use the Power Point at home. That would have really made things a lot easier for us! I wouldn’t have put paragraphs to answer my questions because it was too difficult to present with a big paragraph scrolling so fast on the Imovie. I would have some major points over pictures and not have made it so boring. I would have also added more pictures because I didn’t have so many pictures and most of them were at the beginning and the end, not many were in the middle. Also, I would have used a printed version of the questions and answers because we have a lot of difficulty with that part. When we were presenting, our music that we had on the Imovie wasn’t there anymore, when we played the iMoive, there was no sound, it was very strange. I would have also changed that. All in all, I would have definitely changed many things in my iMoive!

How are your two events connected?

These two current events are connected because they are both about bombs in Iraq.  In my event, only16 people dies. In the origional posting, 95 people died. There are many similarities between the two blogs, the two are both about car bombs in Iraq, both bombs are around the same area, the two bombings were both in an open market near restaurants. There were also some differences between the two events, my event was in Kufa, wheres Sophie’s event was in Diyala, a province in Baghdad. My event happened as a man drove his car and was just about to park it outside a restaurant when it exploded.

What did you find interesting about this topic?

I thought that it is very interesting that almost every week there are suicide bomb attacks in Iraq. I think it is terrible that it happens so often. I would really like to know why there are so many suicide bombings, not only in Iraq, but every where. I would really like to stop all the bombs in the world. I find it strange and hard to understand how the suicide bombers would want to even kill them selves.

What did you like about the initial blog posting?

I really liked that Sophie separated the different questions, it makes her blog easier to read. I thought that it was a really nice thing that if Sophie was directly involved, she would try and hold proper funerals for those killed in the bomb attack. I also really like that Sophie used pictures in her blogs to explain her current event better.  The map helps me to understand where all the cities in her posting are. I also really like the fact that under the ‘Who is affected and how’ question, Sophie used bullet form and put a hyphen to show how they are affected. Great job Sophie, keep up the good work!

Comment on this statement: “The whole is only as strong as the sum of its parts.” and whether this statement is true for the United Nations.

The whole is only as strong as the sum of its parts. This quote means that every thing together is only asgood as all theparts added together. This also means that theparts must be strong as well because if the partsare notstrong, than the whole it self, will not be strong. This is true for the U.N. because if the U.N. was only one country, it would not benations united, and they would get nothing done. This quote isalso quite like”United we stand, divided we fall.” Itis like this quote because they are both sayings thatif the U.N. was all thesedifferentcountriesseparately, they would notdo well at all, but if they were differentcountries working together, as a whole, theycoulddo many things for peace, development, humanrights, and many more around the world.

This is a map of the country where the planet was discoved:

This is a picture that the Eso telescope took:

What is the issue?

The issue is that astronomers have found an Earth like planet outside our Solar System. The planet orbits the star Gliese 581. Which is 20.5 light years away Libra, the constellation. Astronomers discovered the planet with the Eso 3.6m Telescope in Chile. The temperatures of the planet mean that there could be water-meaning there could be life on this  un named planet. Stephane Udry said that “Moreover, its radius should be only 1.5 times the Earth’s radius, and models predict that the planet should be either rocky - like our Earth - or covered with oceans.” This planet might be the target for space missions in the future. This planet lies in the ‘habitable zone’ meaning that the tempreature is perfect for life. Scientists say that this planet has the right things to carry life.

Who is involved?

The people involved are:

  • the scientist that found the planet
  • every one on Earth
  • the planet

Who is affected and how?

The people affected are the astronomers who found the planet because they have found a planet where life may be.  And they would have to reaserch more to find out if there is really life on this planet or if it is just possible to have life on the planet. Every one is affected because studing this planet could tell us more about our own Earth. Know that we have discovered this planet we can send missions to this planet and we can maybe see if there are any other living things on it.

What would I do if I were directly involved?

If I were directly involved I would try and see how much I could reaserch on this new planet, I would try and find out if life really exists on the planet. If I was directly involved and with power, I would try and put as much money as possible in to learning more about the planet. I would try and raise money by making the ’sin taxes’ higher because alcohol and smoking is bad for you and we will get more money to put in to the reaserch. I would want to put more money in to the reaserch so that the people of the world will learn about this new planet and we may even find out things about our own Earth.  If many people new about this topic, it may inspire them to try and go there so we could see if there actually is life on the planet.

Famous Egyptian Reflection

April 21, 2007

Explain with details and specific information what you learned and what you found interesting about the presentations you heard in class.

In today’s presentation, I learned many things about many Egyptian people/gods. I had no idea who many of the rulers were (for example, I had no idea who King Khufu was until Robbie presented) and I didn’t know about the great things they did for Egypt (King Khufu was the first pharaoh to build a pyramid). I knew who all of the gods were, but I didn’t know them in such detail. I didn’t know that one of Hathor’s children were Amon, and that was surprising to me because Amon is related to me (Hatshepsut) in a way because I believe that he was my father and chose me to become pharaoh. I really liked Robbie’s presentation of King Khufu because he presented with so much expression! If he had worn a costume, it would have been perfect! From Robbie’s presentation, I learned that King Khufu was the first pharaoh to build a pyramid-the step pyramid. I also really liked Nadiah’s presentation of Osiris because she memorized her whole speech, looked at the audience the entire time, and she presented clearly with a lot of expression-which shows that she practiced a lot. I already knew a lot about Osiris because of the myths that we did in class-but I didn’t know that Osiris changed into the god of the underworld leaving Anubis to be the protector of the dead. I thought that Annika’s presentation of Bastet was done very well! She dressed us so well. Her face-paint of a cat was a really good touch to her speech. From Annika’s presentation, I learned that Bastet was one of the most honored Egyptian gods because she was a cat, and the cats were so worshipped in Egypt, that if your cat died you would have to shave of your eyebrows!

What would you change to improve your speech/presentation if you were to do the assignment again?

To improve my speech, I would change many things! When I was presenting, my false beard kept falling off, but I kept putting it on again. I also wore a royal pharaoh headdress-I used a scarf and that also kept on falling off. So as I was presenting, I was adjusting my false beard and my headdress!  Some where in the middle of my presentation, I took of my beard and headdress because they were distracting me, and probably my audience. It was a mess! I thing I would have secured my headdress and used some thing other than rubber bands to keep my beard in place-maybe string. I would have done my presentation bare foot because I think that Egyptians didn’t wear shoes-but I am not sure about that. I think I should have looked less at note card, I would have tried to memorize it more. I think it would have been better it I did my presentation with a little bit of expression-I was basicly reading of my notecards! My presentaion wasn’t as good as a hoped it would be, but it wasn’t as bad as it would be-it was okay!

Famous Egyptian Speech

April 21, 2007

My name is Hatshepsut, and I had to dress and act as a man to be accepted as a pharaoh, but even after my death, my name was taken off the list of pharaohs because I was a woman. I have ruled the longest of all female rulers in Egypt. I ruled 20 years. I am the daughter of Tutmose I and Queen Ahmose. My name is Hatshepsut, and I am the fourth female ruler of Egypt. I am very different from all the other pharaohs in Egypt.

I, Hatshepsut, was originally the temporary pharaoh for Tutmose III, my stepson. Then when he was old enough to rule, I was still ruling Egypt, and I became the permanent pharaoh.  I ruled in Thebes, Egypt. I was born in the 15th century, and I ruled from 1473-1458 B.C. I became pharaoh because Tutmose III was too young to rule, so I was his temporary ruler.

I made a big name for myself in my life as a pharaoh. I built myself a temple in Deir el-Bahri honoring Hathor and Amon. I believe that Amon, the local god of Thebes, is my father and that he choose me to become pharaoh. At the age of 13, I married my 8-year-old half brother, Tutmose II. I was his main wife, so when he died, I was left to look after Tutmose III and my own daughter Neferure. Then I crowned myself pharaoh, even though Tutmose III was already old enough to become pharaoh. I ordered an expedition to Punt (a state in East Africa) for ivory, gold, animals, and spices. I was very different from the other female rulers of the world!

I made a huge impact on women around the world.  I was an idol of Cleopatra because I overcome the stereotypes and fought to become a female pharaoh. I was the longest reigning female pharaoh, and I accomplished more things in my reign than many other pharaohs in Egypt. When I died, Tutmose III was very happy because he could become pharaoh at last. He took my name of all my statues and registers and replaced them with Tutmose I, Tutmose II, or Tutmose III. My tomb was also destroyed and my mummy went missing. Many things have changed in my lead.

I am Hatshepsut, fourth female pharaoh of Egypt. Neferure, my daughter wore a false beard and the side lock of youth that all children wore. In Egypt, women had royal blood so to become a pharaoh a man of power had to marry a royal queen, so Tutmose II had to marry me! Many people believe that my stepson murdered me for the thrown and he destroyed my tomb. I have done many things in my life, and I have opened many doors to women and men all over the world.

1) How are your two event connected?

Our two events are related because it is the same issue, the article is about the exact same thing. The article I found has different information than the initial blog posting. My article has more information like one of the targeted markets have been hit before. The article I found had the times of all these events and I thought that was very helpful to understand the issue better.

2) What did you find interesting about this topic?

I thought it was very interesting that people were protesting against the U.S. and Iraq joining forces to make Iraq safer, I would think that the Iraqi people would be happy to have a safer environment! I thought it was quite interesting that one bomb went of in front of a police station!

3) What did you like about the initial blog posting?

I really liked that the initial posting was very organized. I noticed that Andrea didn’t put the citation all together in one line, she wrote what it was and then wrote it (e.g. Website Title:  BBC News). That way it is very easy to read and you can find exactly what you want without having to find it. I like the way that Andrea writes “Andrea” at the bottom of all her posting because sometimes when I read a blog posting, I sometimes forget whose blog it actually is, so it helps me remember.

Homework- All Blocks (Feb 9/12)

February 12, 2007

1. What would you change about the final product (the wiki you created) if you were to do the assignment again?

If I were to change the final product of my wiki, I would spend more time reesearching to find the informartion we needed on the Enviorment topic. At the last minute, we realized that there was no information for Enviorment. We were all rushing to get some information, so the Enviorment page didn’t have much information. I would have not left all my researching on the Physical Place to the last minute. I would have spent more time looking for images to make our wikispace nicer looking. It would have been easier if we assigned each person in our group one or two pages that was thiers and no one else looked at it because than we would have no troubles with “Oh, you are on that page? So am I!”

2. Look at some of the other wikis from any class and find a few that you think ardone exceptionally well. Tell me the name of the empire and the block, and then explain what you like about their wiki.

I really liked block D’s Ancient Zimbabwe wikispace. I liked the way that there weren’t only the five themes of geography (Place, Enviormant, Regions, Movement, and Location), there was also a History page. I thought it was a good idea that they combined Enviorment and Movement because there wasn’t enough information on just one of the pages. It was a great idea to put what you will learn on some pages so it is easier for the audience to see what they need to find. I liked the cooltext on everypage, it brightened up every page. It would have been better if the group had all the different pages on each page so you dont have to go back the homepage over again. I thought it was very good that the History page had so much information. You guys did a great job on the wiki, keep up the goog work!
